The Left –Reporting Live (feat. Guilty Simpson)

It’s release day for Detroit group The Left (comprised of producer Apollo BrownDJ Soko, and Journalist 103) whose album Gas Mask is in stores today.  To celebrate Mello Music Group has prepared the lead single,  Reporting Live featuring Guilty Simpson, for everyone to bump.
The lead track starts with a soulful sample lamenting “a change, a change has just got to come”  before Apollo’s beat drops, wind instruments whistle, and Journalist lays the lyrical foundation:
“I grew up in the ghetto of Fenkell Avenue / In a hood were drug dealing was natural / And if you messed up a package niggahz came after you / bust the nine at you or beat you to you was black and blue /  This here’s factual, fairy tales are non existant / Like the American dream cause I aint never lived it”
The track continues in gritty fashion, taking listeners deeper into Motown‘s streets with Guilty Simpsonwho jumps in for the second verse with his gravel drawl, painting a bittersweet portrait of a hustlers life in Rock City.  The track plays the perfect line between bragadocia and solemnity – a fitting debut for the group from Dilla Dog and Big Proof‘s home.
